AUDITION INFORMATION for the Apprentice Artist Program:

Click here to download the 2012 Apprentice Artist Program audition brochure

Apprentice Artist auditions are held each year in various cities, as well as by recording. As much as we would like to hear everyone who submits audition materials, it is seldom possible because of time considerations. An accompanist is provided by DMMO for all live auditions.

Application deadlines for the 2012 Apprentice Artist Program are currently past. Please check back in August 2012 for audition dates for the 2013 Apprentice Artist Program.

Recorded auditions:

Candidates for the Apprentice Artist Program may submit a recorded audition in lieu of a live audition. All recordings will be heard. Compact discs are preferred.

AUDITION INFORMATION for OPERA Iowa Touring Troupe:

During fall auditions, Des Moines Metro Opera will also hear singers to complete the casting needs for OPERA Iowa, its highly successful traveling education troupe. The total group consists of six singers, a music director/pianist and a scenic technician, who rehearse for three weeks and then travel for ten weeks throughout Iowa and the surrounding states, performing in schools and on community concert series. All OPERA Iowa artists are offered positions with the Apprentice Artist Program for the summer of 2012.

The OPERA Iowa period of employment generally runs from January to April each year. Compensation is competitive. Travel, housing and per diem while touring will be covered by Des Moines Metro Opera. The 2012 tour includes fully staged productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute for community and high school audiences and Malcolm Fox's Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing for elementary audiences. Performances are sung in English and accompanied by piano.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • $22 non-refundable application fee
  • Completed application form (download the 2012 AAP and OPERA Iowa Audition Application)
  • Current résumé
  • 8x10 photograph
  • For recorded audition only: CD is preferred or DVD. Include two arias of contrasting style.
  • Non-US citizens only: proof of right to work in the United States

A live audition is not guaranteed and a preliminary recording is not necessary if you wish to be considered for a live audition. All recordings submitted under the "recorded audition" category will be heard. Please contact us at (515) 961-6221 with any questions about the application process.
