This event is free and open to the public, and Carlisle Floyd himself will be in attendance!

The event is free, but reservations are required.

If Music be the food of love - PLAY ON!

DMMO enjoyed actors from The Iowa Shakespeare Experience as part of the opening night dinner for Macbeth! The actors, who were in full Elizabethan regalia with the Iowa Shakespeare Experience, also now invite all Opera patrons to bring wine and picnics to the FREE Iowa Shakesperience Festival on the downtown Des Moines Riverwalk from July 16-July 20. Playing in the European-style setting is A Midsummer Night's Dream Extravaganza with live music and dance plus nightly pre-show concerts. It's all the Shakespeare you remember- told so freshly, you'll never forget! Tell ushers you came "from the Opera" to be shown free special seating as space permits.

Click www.IowaShakespeare.org for details.

Free Opera Previews

Are you looking for insight into the opera before you attend? Then check out our free opera preview!!

Held 45 minutes prior to each performance, the opera previews are led by the assistant stage director and the assistant conductor. They're fun and informative and will give you hints about what to listen for and what you'll see onstage. The previews are held just across the street from the Blank Performing Arts Center in the Brenton Student Center on Simpson College's campus.

As always, if you'd like a light hearted preview enjoyable from your own home, look no further than The Irreverent Guild to Des Moines Metro Opera's 38th festival season.

Even though our season has just started, it will be over before we know it. With a season of only four weeks of shows, it tends to fly by! It helps to remember, however, that we also have superb upcoming events like the Chamber Music Concert, the Stars of Tomorrow concert and of course the James M. Collier Apprentice Artist One-Act Operas to look forward to! Keep reading to find out more about these events.

See you at the opera!

Dear Friends,

As you know, 2010 has been a year that continues to present economic challenges for everyone. Arts and Cultural endeavors have felt the strain caused by our struggling economy particularly strongly. At Des Moines Metro Opera, our pattern of artistic excellance balanced with fiscal responsibility means that we have not been impacted as critically as many other opera companies in the country but opera remains the most expensive art form to produce!

DMMO is fortunate to have the continued strong support of its many friends and supporters. As you may already know, each year August 31 marks the end of DMMO's fiscal year. It is our intention to NOT follow the trend, but to meet our fundraising goal.

In an effort to ensure that this happens, we are proud to announce that one of our most loyal supporters, James M. Collier (sponsor of the James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program), has found a creative way to challenge us all to meet this goal!

Jim has issued a special CHALLENGE to all DMMO supporters to give a gift prior to August 31st. Any gift made by this time will be matched by Jim, DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, up to $25,000!

Please help DMMO continue to meet and surpass its goals! Make a gift today by calling DMMO at (515) 961-9661 or by making your gift online at www.desmoinesmetroopera.org.

DMMO thanks Jim for his continued support and leadership! If you'd like to help in a creative way too, just call the DMMO office. Thank you in advance for your support!

Robert Montana,

Managing Director, Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc.

Secretary, Des Moines Metro Opera Foundation Board of Trustees

Come Dine in the Tent!

One of the things that makes an evening at the opera so special is the chance to enjoy a meal at LaVal Alfresco, DMMO's very own restaurant! Dinners will be located in an air-conditioned tent right next door to the theater. It makes having a delicious dinner before the show ever so convenient!

Chef Michael Lavalle, the culinary director of the Des Moines Embassy Club, has created themed dinner menus to coordinate with each opera! The dinner for The Marriage of Figaro features grilled summer vegetables with manchego cheese and root vegetables, grouper with grilled artichokes and dry sherry sauce and strabwerry flan with churros. Macbeth's pre show dinner brings you lamb and vegetable pasties, carved Scottish angus beef filet with wild mushrooms and Scottish drunken rhubarb crumble with vanilla scotch sauce. Susannah features Southern fare like fried green tomato salad with BBQ toast, collard greens and southern fried chicken thighs. These dishes are only PART of each delicious meal Chef Lavalle has created for us! Your only problem will be finding enough room to fit all this delicious food!

Water, iced tea and coffee are served with all dinners. A wine list is available for extra charge and corkage fee is $20.

Visit here to reserve your dinner! Or, as always, call 515-961-6221.

James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program

The James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program is one of the driving forces behind each and every Des Moines Metro Opera Festival Season. This program was established 36 years ago to provide career training to emerging singers to help them bridge the gap between their academic studies and the world of professional opera.

Each summer, 40 exceptional young singers are singled out from over 800 auditions as the best and the brightest. These 40 singers then spend seven weeks in Indianola taking part in one of the largest and most highly-acclaimed programs for young artists. They delve into intensive work with coaches and directors from around the country, studying all aspects of stagecraft and honing their vocal talents.

The Apprentice Artists study, rehearse and perform over 35 scenes in a series of 10 programs over the course of the season. Chosen from every corner of the repertory, you'll see scenes from favorite operas like La Traviata and Don Giovanni, as well as rarer works like The Cunning Little Vixen and Wozzeck.

These performances typically take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1:30 pm. They are held in Lekberg Hall in the Amy Robertson Music Center on the Simpson College campus. This week's scenes programs will take place on Wednesday June 30 and Saturday, July 3, and will feature excerpts from the following operas: Porgy and Bess, The Rape of Lucretia, Turandot, Der Rosenkavalier, La Traviata, La Clemenza di Tito, I Puritani, Un ballo in Maschera, Sweeney Todd, La Cenerentola and Manon.

Click here to see the complete schedule of performances.

Masterclass with Catherine Malfitano

Friday, July 17, 1:00pm at Lekberg Hall

World renowned soprano Catherine Malfitano will present a masterclass for the James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program, working with individual singers on their musical and dramatic interpretations. This class is free and open to the public.

Catherine Malfitano, singer, actor, director, and teacher, was born in New York City to a dancer/actress mother and violinist father. She has sung an eclectic, wide-ranging, and glamorous repertoire of over 70 roles, encompassing the entirety of operatic history from the 17th to the 21st century. Her more than 1400 performances have been seen and heard at all the major opera houses of the world, and on television.

Celebrated as a unique music theater performer, Ms. Malfitano is acclaimed for her commanding vocalism, impeccable musicianship, elegant stage presence, and riveting dramatic abilities. Her portrayal of Tosca, broadcast live from the actual Roman settings and at the actual times of the opera, was seen by more than one billion television viewers worldwide in 1992, and garnered her an Emmy Award.
