Dear Friends,
As you know, 2010 has been a year that continues to present economic challenges for everyone. Arts and Cultural endeavors have felt the strain caused by our struggling economy particularly strongly. At Des Moines Metro Opera, our pattern of artistic excellance balanced with fiscal responsibility means that we have not been impacted as critically as many other opera companies in the country but opera remains the most expensive art form to produce!
DMMO is fortunate to have the continued strong support of its many friends and supporters. As you may already know, each year August 31 marks the end of DMMO's fiscal year. It is our intention to NOT follow the trend, but to meet our fundraising goal.
In an effort to ensure that this happens, we are proud to announce that one of our most loyal supporters, James M. Collier (sponsor of the James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program), has found a creative way to challenge us all to meet this goal!
Jim has issued a special CHALLENGE to all DMMO supporters to give a gift prior to August 31st. Any gift made by this time will be matched by Jim, DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, up to $25,000!
Please help DMMO continue to meet and surpass its goals! Make a gift today by calling DMMO at (515) 961-9661 or by making your gift online at www.desmoinesmetroopera.org.
DMMO thanks Jim for his continued support and leadership! If you'd like to help in a creative way too, just call the DMMO office. Thank you in advance for your support!
Robert Montana,
Managing Director, Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc.
Secretary, Des Moines Metro Opera Foundation Board of Trustees

James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program
The James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program is one of the driving forces behind each and every Des Moines Metro Opera Festival Season. This program was established 36 years ago to provide career training to emerging singers to help them bridge the gap between their academic studies and the world of professional opera.
Each summer, 40 exceptional young singers are singled out from over 800 auditions as the best and the brightest. These 40 singers then spend seven weeks in Indianola taking part in one of the largest and most highly-acclaimed programs for young artists. They delve into intensive work with coaches and directors from around the country, studying all aspects of stagecraft and honing their vocal talents.
The Apprentice Artists study, rehearse and perform over 35 scenes in a series of 10 programs over the course of the season. Chosen from every corner of the repertory, you'll see scenes from favorite operas like La Traviata and Don Giovanni, as well as rarer works like The Cunning Little Vixen and Wozzeck.
These performances typically take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1:30 pm. They are held in Lekberg Hall in the Amy Robertson Music Center on the Simpson College campus. This week's scenes programs will take place on Wednesday June 30 and Saturday, July 3, and will feature excerpts from the following operas: Porgy and Bess, The Rape of Lucretia, Turandot, Der Rosenkavalier, La Traviata, La Clemenza di Tito, I Puritani, Un ballo in Maschera, Sweeney Todd, La Cenerentola and Manon.
