Masterclass with Sherrill Milnes

Tuesday, July 7, 1:00 pm in Lekberg Hall

Des Moines Metro Opera is pleased to announce a masterclass within the James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program conducted by acclaimed opera star Sherrill Milnes.

Universally acclaimed as the foremost operatic baritone of his generation, Mr. Milnes will be in residence with the Company working with artists selected to participate in the 2009 Summer Festival Season.

The class will be held July 7, 2009, at 1:00 pm in Lekberg Hall in the Amy Robertson Music Center on the Simpson College campus in Indianola. Patrons are invited to observe. For more information, call the Des Moines Metro Opera offices at (515) 961-6221.

Stars of Tomorrow Orchestral Concert and Dessert Reception

Thursday, July 9, 7:00 pm at Sheslow Auditorium on the Drake University campus

The Apprentice Artists shine as they are accompanied by members of the Festival Orchestra in the annual Stars of Tomorrow concert, presenting arias, duets and ensembles from many different operas.

Held at Sheslow Auditorium on the Drake University campus on July 9, 2009, the concert is followed by a dessert reception with the artists. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. For tickets, call the DMMO box office at (515) 961-6221 or click here to purchase online.

Dr. Larsen, the stage director and conductor for each and every DMMO production, loves to include animals in his stagings and this year's production of The Barber of Seville is no different! Dr. Larsen's vision calls for Berta, Dr. Bartolo's maid, to have a white, "grumpy-faced" cat. Of course, that cat needs to be comfortable being handled while Berta sings to it, so on Monday afternoon we held auditions for Berta's cat.

Jack Sparrow, a four-year-old, silky-haired Selkirk Rex, was cast in the part. Jack is a show cat who has won a number of titles around the Midwest in the household pet division. Ariel, a Norwegian Forest cat (who preferred not to give her age) also auditioned, but didn't care for Berta's singing quite as much as Jack did. Click here to see pictures of Jack and Ariel with our Berta, Jami Rhodes.

A special thank-you to breeder Lynn for bringing Jack and Ariel in for their auditions!

AAP One-Act Operas

Members of DMMO's James Collier Apprentice Artist Program will perform two one-act operas on July 2 at 7:00pm at the Des Moines Social Club. Continuing with the concept of further exploration into other works written by two of our mainstage composer's, this season's offerings include Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi (the final opera of his Il Trittico) and Carl Maria von Weber's Abu Hassan.

Gianni Schicchi is a well known operatic comedy and represents one of the few forays Puccini made into lighther repertory. One of the most successful and hilarious of operatic comedies, the piece is based on a story that is referred to in Dante's The Divine Comedy and is best known for the soprano aria, "O mio babbino caro," which has been featured in a number of movies and other works. The opera will be performed in English.

Abu Hassan is an opera in one act by Carl Maria von Weber to a libretto by Franz Hiemer, based on a story in A Thousand and One Nights. It was composed around 1811 and features set numbers with both recitative and spoken dialogue. The piece is occassionally performed in concert but rarely staged. Set in Baghdad, this domestic comedy tells the story of the heavily-in-debt Abu Hassan and his wife Fatime, who pretend to be dead in order to deal with Omar, the moneylender, who is eventually tricked and sent to prison by the Caliph.

In addition to the two one-act operas, the James Collier Apprentice Artists study, rehearse and perform over 35 scenes in a series of 10 programs over the course of the season. Chosen from every corner of the repertory, you'll see scenes from favorite operas like La Traviata and Le Nozze di Figaro, as well as rarer works like Vĕc Makropulos and Le Comte Ory.

These performances are held in Lekberg Hall in the Amy Robertson Music Center on Simpson College's campus. This week's scenes programs will take place on Wednesday, June 24 and Saturday, June 27, at 1:30 pm and will feature excerpts from the following operas: Orfeo ed Euridice, L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Dialogues of the Carmelites, Suor Angelica, La Clemenza di Tito, The Ballad of Baby Doe, Vĕc Makropulos, Rigoletto, Iphigéne en Tauride, Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria, Le Comte Ory, and Paisiello's Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
