Mainstage Opera Update

We Need A Few Good Men!

All opera productions are larger than life and one of the things that makes them look so great is having lots of bodies on stage to complete the director's vision.

The "Te Deum" scene in Tosca requires a full liturgical procession with 16 priests, bishops and cardinals. We still need more men to fill these non-singing roles! If you are between the ages of 20 and 80, and are available for four rehearsals and six performances, we would love to have you! This is a great way to meet opera professionals and see a production from a brand new perspective. If you're interested, please contact Michael Egel at (515) 961-1333 or click here to send him an email.

Here's what's coming up in the next couple of weeks:

Opening Nights of Tosca and Der Freischütz: Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, 7:30 pm at the Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola

Vino & Verdi: Tuesday, June 23, 6-8 pm at the Blank Performing Arts Center in Indianola

Opening Nights of Tosca and Der Freischütz

Central Iowa audiences will have a chance to see this fantastic work beginning on Saturday, June 20. The cast is top-notch, with tenor Jeffrey Springer singing the role of Max, renowned soprano Brenda Harris making her DMMO debut and her role debut as Agathe, soprano and Iowa native Melanie Long will sing the role of Ännchen, and David Crawford will make his DMMO debut in the role of Caspar.

Vino & Verdi

Tuesday, June 23, 6-8 pm

Hosted by The OPERAtors and the three Chapters of Des Moines Metro Opera's Guild, Vino & Verdi offers newcomers to opera a chance to learn a little bit more about opera and how a production goes from the notes on the page to the spectacle we see on the stage. This relaxed and informal introduction to opera includes a wine reception, a discussion of the production, a brief backstage tour and the opportunity to observe a working rehearsal. Those new to DMMO will also have a chance to chat with Guild members and ask questions of the production team and artists.

Each spring Iowa Public Radio host Karen Bryan sits down with Dr. Larsen for an in-depth interview to discuss the upcoming season and all the surprises in store for DMMO audiences once the curtain goes up. Listen to the third installment of their conversation on Iowa Public Radio's classical stream on Saturday, June 13 11:30 am to 12 noon. Visit www.iowapublicradio.org to find your local station or to listen online.

This Week in the Apprentice Artist Program

The James Collier Apprentice Artists study, rehearse and perform over 35 scenes in a series of 10 programs over the course of the season. Chosen from every corner of the repertory, you'll see scenes from favorite operas like La Traviata and Le Nozze di Figaro, as well as rarer works like Vĕc Makropulos and Le Comte Ory.

These performances are held in Lekberg Hall in the Amy Robertson Music Center on Simpson College's campus. This week's scenes programs will take place on Thursday, June 11, and Saturday, June 13, at 1:30 pm and will feature excerpts from the following operas: Semele, La Cenerentola, Lucia di Lammermoor, Die Fledermaus, The Crucible, Die Zauberflöte, The Rake’s Progress, Faust, Susannah, and Die Fliegende Holländer. Click here to see the complete schedule of performances.

Stay tuned for updates each week and you won't miss a moment of the excitement of the 37th Festival Season!

At DMMO, we are committed to making your experience with us the best it can be! If there is something you'd like to learn more about send an email to McB McManus.
