OPERAzzi September 5, 2007

Welcome to September's OPERAzzi!

It hardly seems possible that summer is almost over and fall is just around the corner! Here at DMMO, we are hard at work laying the groundwork for another fantastic season next summer. There is a lot to do between now and then: auditions, OPERA Iowa's 22nd annual tour, Guild activities, and so much more!

OPERAzzi is here to keep you connected. We'll keep you "in the know" with event details, casting announcements and articles that will help you learn more about the 36th Festival Season. Look for OPERAzzi in your inbox the first week of each month.

As always, we love to hear from you. If you have questions, comments or story ideas, drop us a line at msmith@dmmo.org.

Enjoy!

The Subscription Renewal Campaign Is Coming!

One of the benefits of being a season ticket holder is the opportunity to renew your subscription for the upcoming season before the general public! That means you can lock in your seats before they are sold to new subscribers. Current subscribers will be receiving a brochure with a renewal form in the mail within the next two weeks. Be sure to complete it and return it to us right away to ensure that your seats are secured for the 2008 season. Subscription seats that are not renewed by October 31 will be released and will become available to new subscribers.

On November 1, subscriptions go on sale to the general public. Buying a season ticket definitely has advantages! As a subscriber you have access to the best seats available because you can purchase them earlier than single ticket buyers, you have the privilege of exchanging your ticket dates if you find a conflict arises in your schedule, and you can save money! As in years past, we expect that many performances will sell out even before opening night; a season subscription guarantees that you will have a great seat for all three operas instead of being left on a waiting list.

A subscription includes one ticket to each opera and there are several different subscription series available to suit any schedule and every budget (in fact, our prices have not gone up since the 2007 season):

Three Great Operas On Tap For 2008

Giuseppe Verdi's A Masked Ball (or Un Ballo in Maschera in the original Italian) is an opera that had a rough time getting to the stage. Government censors forced Verdi to change the location from the court of Sweden's Gustavus III to Boston to avoid stirring anti-monarchy sentiment. It is the story of a plot to kill the king mixed with seduction, betrayal and fortune-telling.

DMMO's production returns the action to Sweden as the composer originally intended. We are looking forward to welcoming back several powerhouse performers for this opera, making it one you won't want to miss! Todd Thomas, quickly becoming a specialist in Verdi's most challenging baritone roles, will portray our Anckarström. His wife, the lovely Amelia, will be sung by soprano Lise Lindstrom, our Ariadne in 2004 and Giulietta in 2005. Tenor Arnold Rawls returns to our stage after several years to sing the role of King Gustavus. His last role with us was Calaf in the 2002 production of Turandot.

Regina, Marc Blitzstein's opera based on Lillian Hellman's play, The Little Foxes, premiered in New York in 1949. It is a tale of greed and the consuming desire for wealth and power and the consequences on a Southern family at the turn of the last century.

The inimitible Gwendolyn Jones will return to sing the title role. Gwen has sung many roles here at DMMO, including Queen Elizabeth I in 2005's Gloriana, Elizabeth Proctor in 2003's The Crucible and Herodias in 2002's Salome.

Gaetano Donizetti's The Elixir of Love (or L'Elisir d'Amore in Italian) is set in Spain's Basque region during the 19th century. A charming comedy of love, this opera is one of the finest examples of the bel canto style of opera and features lush music that will tantalize and excite with coloratura acrobatics.

Audience favorite Jane Redding will lend her talent to our production as Adina. Jane was last seen as Queen Tytania in last summer's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
